Senator Alvarado-Gil’s Co-Authored Wildfire Recovery Bill Signed into Law

Bipartisan Measure Creates Consistent Statewide Process to Speed Rebuilding and Cut Red Tape After Major Fires

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (R-Jackson) announced that SB 904, which she co-authored with Senator Kelly Seyarto, has been signed into law. The bill creates a consistent statewide process to identify and address permitting barriers so communities can rebuild faster after major wildfires.

“This is a big, bipartisan win for our district and all Californians who live with the threat of wildfire each year.”

When the Office of Emergency Services determines a wildfire has destroyed 25 or more structures, the Department of Housing and Community Development must work with state and local agencies to recommend which permitting requirements and local procedures can be suspended or streamlined, with a goal of issuing needed permits within 30 days. Starting in 2028, the bill also requires electronic submission of recovery applications and a review of building standards that could be temporarily adjusted for safe, cost-effective rebuilding (while protecting critical fire-safety rules).

“Families in Senate District 4 should be able to focus on recovery, not endless red tape,” said Senator Alvarado-Gil. “This bill ensures every community hit by wildfire gets the same coordinated, practical support to rebuild quickly and safely.
