SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Today, Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil (R-Jackson) issued the following statement after authorities identified the victims of the February 17 avalanche:
"My heart is heavy as we mourn the tragic loss of nine lives in the devastating avalanche near Castle Peak at Donner Summit. We have just learned that the victims have been identified. And while the full recovery and notification process continues, this heartbreaking event has struck deeply into our district.
"They were beloved individuals, passionate skiers, family members, friends, and adventurers, who cherished our Sierra Nevada mountains, a place so many of us call home and hold dear to our hearts.
"Several of the victims were members of our community, with strong ties to Soda Springs, Donner Summit, and the surrounding Truckee-Tahoe area, making this loss profoundly personal. My thoughts and prayers are with their families, loved ones, and all who are grieving during this unimaginable time.
"May they find comfort in the outpouring of support from our resilient communities, and may the healing process begin as we honor their memories and rally together in the days ahead."
