Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil coauthors AB 1745 to cut gas tax for one year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (R-Jackson), coauthor of AB 1745 with Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez, urged her colleagues to pass legislation suspending California’s state gas tax for one year. This transparent measure would deliver direct savings to drivers, with every cent passed to consumers via fuel receipts.

California’s gas tax, over 60 cents per gallon, one of the nation’s highest, hits low-income and Hispanic families in Senate District 4 and rural counties especially hard. Many rely on long drives for work in agriculture and essential jobs, where this regressive tax can eat up 9% or more of household income, forcing cuts to groceries, school supplies, or healthcare.

“Your hard-earned money is better spent elsewhere like buying healthy foods for your family or buying your kids supplies for school,” said Senator Alvarado-Gil.

Gas tax funds have too often failed to fix rural roads, leaving highways pothole-filled and unsafe. “No more taxes until we have real accountability that every dollar goes to safe roads for our families and workers,” Senator Alvarado-Gil added.

AB 1745 suspends the 61 cent-per-gallon tax for one year, ensuring full savings go straight to drivers. Working families deserve relief now. Senator Alvarado-Gil urges quick passage of AB 1745 to make California affordable again for Hispanic and low-income households.
