Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil Celebrates Historic Public Safety Milestone: Zero Criminal Homicides in Modesto for 2025

Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (R-Jackson) today applauded the extraordinary achievement of the City of Modesto, the largest city in Senate District 4, in recording zero criminal homicides throughout the entire year of 2025.

"Modesto families can start 2026 knowing their city is safer than it has been in generations. I am proud to represent a district where such progress is being made,” said Senator Alvarado-Gil.

This marks the first time in at least 40 years that Modesto – a community of over 218,000 residents – has gone a full year without a single murder.

“This is a monumental victory for public safety and a testament to what dedicated leadership and community partnership can accomplish," added Senator Alvarado-Gil.

The milestone stands in stark contrast to previous years. In 2015, Modesto recorded 25 homicides, ranking among California's most violent cities at the time. More recently, the city saw 7 homicides in 2024. The dramatic decline reflects sustained investments in data-driven policing, advanced technology such as expanded cameras and a real-time crime center, and strong community support through voter-approved Measure H.

Senator Alvarado-Gil extended special commendation to Modesto Police Chief Brandon Gillespie for his visionary leadership and relentless focus on targeting serious and violent offenders, as well as to Mayor Sue Zwahlen for prioritizing public safety and fostering partnerships that have driven these results.

"Their tireless efforts have ushered in a new era of safety for Modesto, I remain committed to supporting local leaders and law enforcement across Senate District 4 to build on this success."
